M51 (5-18-09)

So I have some success autoguiding and then the next night out the computer refuses to talk to the mount. It's a cable problem, I believe. So this is M51, unguided.

The image is 115x30" unguided on the EM-10, taken with the Atik 16 through the Vixen R135S, processed in Nebulosity 1 and Photoshop Elements 7.

Far out, mate! Lovely photo! I have been itching to image M51, and last night had to image M3 instead due to bad transparency this way. I can't wait to image M51 now that I have seen this photo. Well done!

Thanks, Phil! I'll be waiting to see what you get! You have a bigger, deeper optic to shoot through, plus you'll get some color.

Hey...

Any chance you could post your RAW image for an example? I'd like to compare them to mine to see if I am on the right track.

I shot 40 mins of M51 last night, and the result is so-so. Not very sharp and not very bright. It may be the software I am using (Deep Sky Stacker) but Nebulosity is having an issue with my Nikon RAW files.

Cheers,
Phil
