The Horsehead Nebula (Fall 2021)


OK, it's not like I've never taken an image of the Horsehead Nebula, but I haven't with this scope and camera.  This one took four nights and includes only frames east of the meridian (till the tree blocks the view). I was happy to capture signs of four or five Herbig-Haro objects identified in this paper.

This is 56x300" with the 203mm Synta ONTC Newtonian at f/4.95 with the Atikc 460EXC and an Astronomik CLS filter.

Horsehead Nebula (Jan. 2017)


OK, another Horsehead, but I had a lot of fun taking it.  This is 7x600" with the SXVF-H9 through the CCF290 Classical Cassegrain at f/7.93.

Alnitak, Horsehead, Flame, NGC 2023 (November 2013)

I've admired this scene many times.  I've always wanted to try this myself.  This is two nights' work.  It could easily take many more nights.  What a stunning area of the sky!  Orion holds wonders!  This image is shrunk about 25% from original.

A Brief Horsehead Nebula (3-1-2011)

I'm liking this setup. This image was taken with the Orion 6" f/5 imaging newt, Baader MPCC, IDAS-LPS-P2 vfilter, and SXVF-H9C camera, from the backyard. This is just 7x7', so I'm well short of an hour (my neighbor has this tree, you see). Anyway, it's very impressive what this relatively little scope (at least it looks little on the NJP) will pick up in 49 minutes.

Horsehead Nebula (2-11-2011) & the 10" Newt

This image is the product of everything working right for an hour before the nebula ducked behind my neighbor's tree. This is 6x10' through the 10" Newt, with the Atik 16 through a Baader MPCC and Astronomik 12nm Ha [+NII] filter. The scope was autoguided off-axis.

The scope was working here the way I hope it will always work. The off-axis mirror is in front of the Ha filter but behind the Baader MPCC. The scope was collimated well. I think I have the scope balanced well on the mount. The FT focuser works like a charm. Everything was operated from inside the house using a long USB extender and wireless controls for the focuser.
